Organizing a birthday party in winter and feel like there aren't many options? You're not the only one! Summer birthdays seem to have it all—because they do! As someone with a birthday on January 31st, I understand! In the Des Moines metro area, there are plenty of ways to celebrate. By supporting local businesses, you not only enjoy unique experiences but also help strengthen our community. Here are some amazing ideas to make any winter birthday party memorable:
1. Custom Balloon Art by Creations With a Twist
No party is complete without a touch of whimsy! At Creations With a Twist, I specialize in custom balloon art adding to your theme perfectly. From balloon garlands to twisted sculptures, I’ll bring your vision to life. My services are perfect for adding that wow factor to any venue. Birthday Parties are 45 minutes and start at $120. Perfect for living rooms, playrooms, or even gathered in the kitchen, balloon art at a birthday adds a ton of fun, time to let you get cake ready or just relax, and keeps the whole room entertained while they all guess what I'm creating. Learn more and book your balloons here.
2. Activity Parties in the Des Moines Metro
For a creative or delicious experience, book a craft, cookie, or cupcake decorating session at several businesses around the Des Moines metro. Guests can learn frosting techniques, paint and take, beading, etc.. . These activites are fun for all ages and allows everyone to unleash their inner pastry chef or artist. You can even go to the ARL!
These do take up more of the budget but they also can take the whole party off your plate. Add balloon decor or twisting to level things up!

3. Private Movie Screening...add With A Twist!
Pick a movie, invite your guests, and enjoy some snacks! It’s a cozy way to escape the cold and enjoy quality entertainment together. A lot of venues have a private party room as well, open gifts and have cake (or even some balloon art!) before or after the movie.

4. Parties at the pool
Kids can splash around while adults relax poolside. It’s a surefire way to keep the energy up and the birthday excitement flowing. However this option can take up more of the budget-- pool rentals around the metro range from $175-$500 for two hours.
Check out Des Moines Parent's recent blog post on indoor swimming in Des Moines for some great options:
I've also done birthday parties poolside at Easter Seals and Adventureland Inn
5. Indoor Playtime at Playground for Kids
Perfect for younger children, Playground for Kids offers a variety of inflatables, jungle gyms, and more in a climate-controlled environment. Their birthday packages include everything you need for a stress-free time of fun. Order a pizza or hotdogs and they let you bring in outside dessert! We will be having our twin's 4th Birthday party here! There are other options for similar indoor play in the metro-- but those can run $500 and they aren't private! Playground for Kids is the best option in my opinion for this type of party. Spruce up your party room with themed balloon decor or have balloon art while you eat cake!

6. Party with a Princess
Have the most magical party with Little Princess Parties! Transform your special event into an enchanting experience filled with wonder and joy. Little Princess Parties specializes in creating unforgettable moments for children, offering a variety of themed parties that cater to every little one's dreams. Talented performers bring characters to life, engaging children with delightful storytelling, interactive games, and captivating performances that spark their imagination.
Add a themed garland to your space or double up on the fun and have me come and twist up some princesses!
7. Imaginative Play
Another great option is to explore free play options! Free play is an invaluable aspect of childhood development, offering children the opportunity to engage in unstructured, imaginative activities that foster creativity and independence. We have several great options in the metro!
Have me POP in and add a garland, character, or Party Pillar to the space! A lot of venues also allow me to come in and twist before or after play.
The Des Moines Metro offers a wide range of options if you know where to search! With over 20 years of experience in the party industry, I've attended hundreds of parties and now with our twins we have been planning our own! The current trend is definitely to go "extra," and now there are many custom party accessories available on Etsy, such as personalized treat boxes or chip wrappers, which can also make it easy to go "extra" on your budget! Balloon art is an excellent way to add a significant impact and wow factor to your party without overspending. The venues and activities around the Des Moines Metro make it simple to lighten your load. Combine these elements for the ultimate birthday party that will make your kiddo's friends envious!
